However, in a flexible or reconfigurable manufacturing system, Macro-planning has to be done frequently as the machines/products and their modules are changed. 3 Micro-Process Planning At this level, the details of each individual operation are optimized to determine the best process parameters. For metal removal the feed, speed, depth of cut, tools, fixtures, cutting path, etc. are determined to optimize process time, and cost and avoid undesirable behaviour such as tool breakage and chatter. More detailed planning specifies the machining execution instructions and NC program steps.

CONCLUSIONS This keynote has introduced the concept of BMS, which adapts dynamically to nonpredeterministic changes in manufacturing environments based on biologically inspired ideas such as self-organisation, adaptation, evolution, and learning. The basic theory for BMS is Emergent Synthesis, by which the central question is how to determine the system’s structure to exhibit its function and achieve a purpose under informational incompleteness. With respect to the incompleteness of information about the environment and specifications related to the purpose, difficulties in synthesis can be categorised into three classes: Class l problems with complete description of the information of both the specification and environment; Class II problems with incomplete environment description; and Class III problems, with incomplete specifications.

Because of the participation of the new producer, the structure of the networks changes remarkably: some new networks emerge and others disappear. The amount of material flow at figure 7(b) also largely differs from that for figure 7(a). The new producer rapidly increases its market share and ultimately wins (figure 7(c)). The winning producer is characterised by providing low-cost products with average technical properties and appropriate distances from both suppliers and dealers. , 2004) by introducing bounded rationality as a characteristic of agents to develop their behaviour in BMS.
