Griffith reports, however, that while pauses can indeed be regarded as reliable segmentation markers assisting comprehension in oral reading, evidence is less conclusive for spontaneous speech (Griffith, 1991) (though this does not mean that they do not have a syntactic function). L2 studies are producing similar observations (see Chaudron's 1988 review of classroombased studies), but work in this area is, again according to Griffith, yet to be as thorough and reliable as it is in L1 pausological research.
