Fusing key matters of up to date sociology: globalization and its discontents, and the 'complexity flip' in social idea, authors Chesters and Welsh make the most of complexity conception to research the moving constellation of social stream networks that represent competition to neo-liberal globalization. They discover how doubtless chaotic and hugely differentiated social actors interacting globally via machine mediated communications, face-to-face gatherings and protests represent a 'multitude' no longer simply grasped via verified versions of social and political change.Drawing upon wide empirical learn and using innovations drawn from the ordinary and social sciences this e-book indicates a framework for realizing mobilization, id formation and knowledge flows in international social events working inside advanced societies. There is an explicit foregrounding of ‘civilisation’ in the work of Deleuze and Guatarri, derived in part from engagement with psychoanalytic theory where the term assumes analytical significance, rather than society. Here, Deleuze and Guattari’s prioritisation of difference diverges from the Freudian emphasis on the achievement of a sound gendered identity through the resolution of the underlying tensions of polymorphous sexuality. Desire for Deleuze and Guattari is thus not centred on a pervasive sense of ‘lack’ as in the work of Lacan but as an active affirmation of life, embracing and producing difference.
In Foucauldian terms a ‘micro-physics of power’ is played out on the street as a strategic encounter between protestors and the ‘security state’ in ritualised forms where there are no ‘untouched’ passive observers. By creating a ‘time between times’ the AGM renders them in a particularly condensed form through the work of highly skilled and committed individuals – whom we term ‘free radicals’. This is a critical form of immaterial cultural labour which teaches transferable techniques of self, acting as a conduit transposing workplace bio-politics into and onto the public sphere.
This is consistent with work on small world networks and we approach the AGM as a diverse interest group whose use of the web represents an exemplar of the kinds of intended and targeted impacts achievable by distributed network actors. As we show in Chapters 3 and 4, the role of social networks constituted and consolidated via mobility, by internationals or free radical within the AGM, do play a significant role here. These roles do not however simply replicate the dominance of frame-work by movement intellectuals but, through adherence to underlying principles originating in the geographical ‘South’, focus on maintaining an open process – a defining feature of multitude (see Hardt and Negri 2004: 99–105).
