Another major issue is that current methods for CTC detection result in capture of tumor cells of which the majority are apoptotic [57–59]. It is important to have an alternative procedure of isolating viable CTCs that are responsible for metastases and characterizing this population.
Also, isolated DTCs can remain viable and some can be propagated in culture while maintaining the original 16 CIRCULATING TUMOR CELLS AND HISTORIC PERSPECTIVES mutational status [139, 149, 150]. They may serve as a resource for investigating new drug therapies.
