The distribution of this material, which sinks very slowly, follows a vertical gradient which is more in keeping with largely bacterial decomposition processes, the bacterial activity being greatest at the POC maximum (0-30 m) and diminishing where only the refractory organic compounds remain at greater depths. The distribution of bacterioplankton in the water column as discussed earlier would tend to support their role in determining the exponential decline in the standing stock of POC with depth.
A description of cyclonic and anticyclonic rings occurring in the Gulf Stream is given by Richardson (1976) and some aspects of their biology are given by the Ring Grou^ (1981).
