In contrast, the standing stock of POC appears to be a residual, highly refractory component of the food chain. The distribution of this material, which sinks very slowly, follows a vertical gradient which is more in keeping with largely bacterial decomposition processes, the bacterial activity being greatest at the POC maximum (0-30 m) and diminishing where only the refractory organic compounds remain at greater depths. The distribution of bacterioplankton in the water column as discussed earlier would tend to support their role in determining the exponential decline in the standing stock of POC with depth.

A description of cyclonic and anticyclonic rings occurring in the Gulf Stream is given by Richardson (1976) and some aspects of their biology are given by the Ring Grou^ (1981). An idealized crosssection of a cold core ring has been drawn in Fig. 19 on the basis of information in the latter reference. Essentially the cold core ring is a cyclonic gyre which has an upwelling component as seen from the temperature structure in Fig. 19. The advection of deep water towards the surface brings with it a supply of nutrients which is the basis for the increased primary productivity within the ring as seen in Fig.

Texts on the analysis of chemical constituents have been prepared by Strickland and Parsons (1972) and Grasshoff (1976). Sea water is generally characterized in terms of its salt content or salinity. Earlier definitions of salinity referred to the dry weight of salts per kilogram of sea water.
