At the same time, the NAE distanced itself from the American Council of Christian Churches (ACCC), a coalition of separatist fundamentalists organized by Carl McIntire in 1941. The ACCC insisted that revival would only come when fundamentalists separated themselves from denominations controlled by modernists or moderates. With the founding of the NAE, more moderate fundamentalists increasingly began to refer to themselves as “evangelicals,” although such labels remained very fluid well into the 1950s.

Despite the collapse of the candy business, Bright sought fresh entrepreneurial opportunities. He organized a new business connecting customers with local wholesalers, offering clothing, jewelry, furniture, and other products at only 10 percent above the wholesale price, with the markup forming Bright’s profit. “It wasn’t a success either,” recollects Ted Franzle, who knew the Brights through Hollywood Presbyterian.

Henry’s efforts, however, were in vain. 30 That summer, Bright resolved another long-standing internal debate. Since the spring of 1946, he had been engaged to marry Vonette Zachary. Zachary, five years younger than Bright, had also grown up in Coweta, and Bright—whom Zachary’s friends dubbed the “Candy Man”—initiated a long-distance romance with her in the summer of 1945. Engaged after a weekend visit, the couple—with the prompting of Zachary’s parents—agreed to delay their wedding until Zachary’s 1948 graduation from Texas State College for Women.
